"The Exam Room" - The Issue
 Why Support Marriage?

"Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today in the presence of God and these witnesses..." These were the words my father spoke at every wedding I attended during his ministry. In 2005 according to the CDC's National Vital Statistics Report, 2,279,000 people or 7.5 per 1000 were so joined between the ages of 15-44. Unfortunately during this same period 3.6 per 1000 in this age group who were married were divorced.

The failure of the US Senate to pass the Marriage Amendment speaks poorly of our legislators' appreciation for this venerable institution which is a cornerstone of this nation's social order. Many people may want to unite but for this nation, marriage should be more than a civil union, it must also be a legally protected union.

"The Diagnosis" - What's Ailing Us?
The Lack of Marriage Defined as One Man and One Woman

The rights of gay people should not be a defining issue for the Marriage Amendment. On this issue of marriage, we should be as concerned about polygamy (more than one wife that some renegade branches of Mormons practice), sects and cults whose bonding relationships are questioned, bigamist who have serial unions at the same time, "common law marriages" and for some polyandry where one woman may have more than one husband. A Marriage Amendment makes it clear that all of these as well as other non- traditional cultural patterns which may be furthered by immigration patterns are not acceptable in this democratic society and will not have legal protections.

"The Prescription" - Dr. Fisher's Solution
 Passage of the Marriage Amendment

The Marriage Amendment, if put in the framework of one man and one woman at one time, will do much to protect the rights of parties so involved, provide legal shelter for children born within such a union and necessitate reform of state laws to look over antiquated statues on marriage. When government officials don't support basic traditional institutions which have helped define us as a people, something is wrong in our logic and thinking.

To the right, James and Cheryl Godwin at their wedding. Cheryl is the neice of Dr. Fisher and one of the webmasters for the campaign.

 "The Patient File"
What's So Wrong with Defining Marriage?

The failure of the US Senate to pass the Marriage Amendment speaks poorly for legislator’s appreciation for this institution, which goes to the heart of society’s underpinnings.  The rhetoric calling this an anti-gay marriage debate is off base.  The Marriage Amendment should simply state that “Marriage is the union of one man and one woman at one time.”   This statement recognizes that many people may want to unite and may per state laws, but as for this nation, marriage will be more than a civil union, it will also be protected.
